Magic Bay: Africa’s longest right-hand wave
Imsouane’s headline wave, known as Magic Bay (or simply the Bay), is famous for being one of the longest right-hand point waves in Africa — on a good day it can peel for several hundred metres. For beginners that length is gold: you can practise the same skills over and over on a single ride. For improvers, the outside section offers a long, workable wall to link turns. Just around the headland, the punchier peaks at Cathedral give more confident surfers something steeper to work on.
Best time of year to surf in Imsouane
You can surf in Imsouane all year round, which is part of what makes it such a good place to learn. Broadly:
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): consistent swell, warm water and fewer crowds.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): the most reliable and biggest swells; the Bay stays beginner-friendly on the inside.
- Spring (Mar–May): clean conditions and pleasant weather, still plenty of swell.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): smaller, mellow waves — ideal for complete beginners, families and kids.
What to expect as a beginner
